Session 1: What are self-organizing systems and how do they work?
The worlds of nonlinear dynamics and complexity sciences deal with essentially unpredictable systems. Self-organizing is one way to characterize such systems. Human Systems Dynamics and the CDE Model are based on this explanation of causality in social systems, as well as in physical and mathematical systems studied by complexity scientists. In this segment, we will explore the nature of self-organizing systems, as they have influenced the theory and practice of HSD.
Session 2: Where did the CDE come from and where is it going?
One explanation of self-organizing dynamics forms the foundation on which HSD is built. We call it Pattern Logic. It recognizes three metavariables that influence the speed, path, and results of self-organizing processes. This theory, reflected in the CDE Model as Pattern Logic, emerges from a radical and generative view of physical and metaphysical reality. This session will respond to questions about the origins, underlying assumptions, and ongoing exploration of the CDE Model in the practice of Human Systems Dynamics.
Session 3: Why are Containers about power?
Containers hold agents together until their self-organising patterns can emerge. Like traditional system boundaries, they frame the dynamics of system interactions. Unlike traditional boundaries. Containers are multiple and massively entangled in any system. They are also infinitely varied, including everything from the walls of a room to the shared beliefs of a political movement. To understand and act within those systems, one must be able to discern Containers and anticipate how they can influence future system states. In this session, we will focus on the current political landscape to explore the power and possibility of Containers. We uncover the subtle and powerful character of Containers and explore how they can inform and empower systemic transformation.
Session 4: How can differences hold both energy and meaning?
Differences within any container emerge from past system states and set current conditions for all future states. They also hold the information content of a system to support conscious understanding and intentional action. In this session, we will use the dynamics of intersectionality and multiculturalism to explore the sources and consequences of difference in human systems.
Session 5: What does it mean for Exchanges to actualize potential in a system?
Exchanges consist of the flows across Differences within Containers to amplify or resolve the tensions that all Differences create. Exchanges are spontaneous, whenever the Differences in the system reach critical states, and tensions are resolved. While we often focus on verbal exchange as the primary feature of human systems, HSD acknowledges a wide variety of visible and invisible Exchanges that influence the emerging future of human systems at all scales. In this session, we will focus on the internet and emerging technologies to explore the opportunities and challenges of natural and intentional exchanges in complex human systems.
Session 6: NOW WHAT are emerging questions and next wise actions?
We hope that this program increases understanding of Pattern Logic and that it prompts new questions about the theory and practice of HSD. In this session, we will explore shifting patterns of HSD Praxis and use patterns of the present to give voice to possibilities of the future. Our own emerging systems—as a learning group, an ecosystem of HSD communities, and actors in a world in transition—will inform our shared inquiry and hopes for future action.

¿A quién está dirigido?
- HSD Associates and others who have a basic understanding of the CDE Model and HSD.
- Anyone feeling passion, responsibility, and curiosity about understanding and effectively using HSD models and methods for real-world impact.
- Practitioners eager to explore Pattern Logic’s origins, current insights, and future possibilities.
- Those who are committed to influencing patterns of human systems to be more generative and systemic.
Preguntas frecuentes u otras consideraciones
1. What makes this course unique?
This is the first advanced program focused on Pattern Logic from within the paradigm itself. Rather than revisiting the basics, it dives into the foundation and deeper substance of the CDE, offering perspectives rarely explored in other trainings.
2. Why was this program created?
Many practitioners reduce CDE to “just tools,” missing the stance and deeper understanding it requires. This program was designed to move beyond surface-level debates and expand the field with richer insights and practice.
3. What’s new in this learning journey?
Participants will explore two areas not addressed before: applying the CDE lens to current events—such as AI, political discourse, and multicultural complexity—and uncovering the philosophical and scientific roots of CDE.
4. Why is it valuable for those already working with CDE?
Even experienced practitioners will benefit from going deeper, clarifying questions, and discovering fresh ways to teach, practice, and innovate. The program renews curiosity, strengthens mastery, and creates space for substantive dialogue.
5. What happens if practice stays focused only on tools?
Relying solely on repeated tools can become mechanical and create blind spots. This program helps break that pattern, enabling participants to see more clearly, expand their language, and engage in more meaningful exploration.
6. Who is this program for?
It’s designed for practitioners already grounded in HSD, especially HSD Associates. With a shared foundation, the group can bypass introductory content and focus on deeper exploration as a community of scholar-practitioners.
7. What should participants bring to the sessions?
The most important preparation is curiosity. Participants are invited to bring their questions and areas of “hunger,” since dialogue and inquiry will shape the journey as much as the planned content.
8. What if I’m based in the APAC region?
The current session times may not be ideal for APAC participants. If 9–10 people express interest, alternative times and dates can be arranged to make participation possible. For details, please e-mail monica@nurturingchoicefulness.co.nz.
